Understanding Sciatica and Chiropractic Care

Sciatica is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, or weakness in the buttocks and legs. The condition affects millions of people worldwide, and many find relief through chiropractic care.

What Is It?

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated or slipped disc in the spine. The spinal discs act as cushions between the vertebrae and provide flexibility to the spine. When a disc herniates, the inner gel-like material protrudes through the outer layer and can compress the adjacent sciatic nerve, resulting in pain and other symptoms.

Other potential causes of sciatica include:

  1. Spinal stenosis: This refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the nerves, including the sciatic nerve.
  2. Piriformis syndrome: The piriformis muscle, located deep within the buttocks, can sometimes tighten or spasm and irritate the sciatic nerve.
  3. Spinal tumors: Although very rare, tumors in the spine can compress the sciatic nerve and cause symptoms of sciatica.
  4. Spondylolisthesis: This condition occurs when one vertebra slips forward over another, causing the narrowing of the spinal canal and subsequent nerve compression.
  5. Trauma or injury: Any direct injury to the lower back, such as a fall or car accident, can injure the sciatic nerve and lead to sciatica.
  6. Degenerative disc disease: With age, the spinal discs can undergo wear and tear, leading to degeneration and potential nerve compression.
